Vibrant NDT Johnson and Allen's Associate help Bloodhound Land Speed Challenge
6th June 2011
Vibrant NDT, Johnson and Allen's associate company, has been used by Bloodhound (The Uk's record breaking land speed attempt project) to test carbon disk brakes which were proposed to bring the vehicle to stop.
It was envisaged that parachutte technology would be used to reduce the rocket car speed from 1000mph down to under 250mph and disk brakes employed for the last 250mph to zero. The brakes were rested to withstand 10,000 rpm.
Two brake types were tested and although one nearly was up to the challenge, Vibrant demonsrtrated changes were occuring to the base material under these rpm's and subsequently it was established that the safety margin was not significant enough to approve the design.
