PT Syllabus

PT Level 1

An individual certified to Penetrant Level 1 has to demonstrate competence to carry out NDT according to written instructions and under the supervision of Level 2 or Level 3 personnel. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Penetrant Level 1 personnel may be authorised by the employer to perform the following in accordance with NDT instructions:

  • Use common DPI equipment
  • Perform basic DPI techniques
  • Record results according to written criteria
  • Report DPI results

PT Level 2

An individual certified to Penetrant Level 2 has demonstrated competence to perform NDT according to Penetrant Testing procedures. Within the scope of the competence defined on the certificate, Level 2 personnel may be authorised by the employer to:

  • Select suitable DPI techniques to be used
  • Define the limitations of different DPI techniques
  • Translate standards into practical instructions
  • Set up and use DPI equipment
  • Perform and supervise DPI at or below Level 2
  • Interpret and evaluate results against standards
  • Prepare DPI written instructions
  • Supervise all tasks at or below Level 2
  • Provide guidance for personnel at or below Level 2
  • Report DPI results

PT Level 3

An individual certified to Level 3 has demonstrated the competence to evaluate and interpret results in terms of existing standards, codes, and specifications. They have sufficient practical knowledge of applicable materials, fabrication, process, and product technology to select NDT methods, establish NDT techniques, and assist in establishing acceptance criteria where none are otherwise available. They will have general familiarity with other NDT methods.

  • Assume responsibility for a test facility and staff
  • Review and validate MPI procedures
  • Interpret codes, standards, specifications and procedures
  • Be able to carry out and understand all tasks at all levels
  • Provide guidance for MPI personnel at all levels
